Wal-Mart Starts RFID Trial Run in Texas

This has the potential of being very exciting for the trucking industry.

Right now, everything has to be manually managed or keyed in. Even with a bar-code scanner, things can take too long. Now, if all pallets are rigged with RFID, trucking companies can instantly know the number of pallets (and WHICH pallets) are on the units. The delivery is now completely integrated with the supply end.

What will this take? Well, either every vehicle would need an RFID reader OR the shipper/delivery location would have to make this stream available to Horizon.

Now, many trucking companies don't need to worry about this. Leave it with the shipper and the delivery. But for customers who deal with containers and pallets, this becomes a huge benefit.

Need to know what pallets are out in your yard? It's automatic.

And if you are storing details about each pallet in the system, then you have an even more effective way of managing detention, including who is paying for it and why.

All in all, a very interesting opportunity.
